I know it’s been a while since I posted on the blog, but I have a good excuse: I moved to a different state. I now live in the great state of Colorado, and it’s been an up and down week as we got settled into our new place.
To make it up to you, I have an announcement: A NEW BOOK!
Read on for more details and a chance to get your own free copy…
BY FLOOD WATERS is a small collection of poems I wrote over the course of several years. They deal with various subject matter, but the common theme is the idea that memories fuel our existence as creatures who change daily, moment by moment…a shared memory is even stronger, and many of the poems in the collection focus on events that happened to me, my friends, or no one in particular; the theme just struck me as poignant, so I wrote some lines about it.
The name of the collection is derived from the flood of 1955, which happened in the Naugatuck Valley in Connecticut. It happened well before I was born, but many of the photographs and other keepsakes my family would have otherwise passed on to me were washed down the valley in the Mad River, and I never got to see them. Part of the collection was my attempt to reconstruct a shared history, a collection of memories.

The recent hurricane, Irene, that brought a considerable amount of rain and wind to areas unaccustomed to hurricanes left many trickling streams flowing like rivers, front yards that looked like lake front property, trees uprooted with their tops laying on houses and cars. (One of those trees landed on a car that was motoring up the road, luckily the passengers were only bruised and startled!) There was one school with what is usually a small river behind the outdoor basketball court. The school building acted as a dam and the water overflowing from the river was pooling in the basketball court. One adventure seeking individual saw that as an opportunity to use his jet ski and was joyriding there, ducking his head to clear the hoops! It was captured on video – a memory he will have proof of and will be able to brag about for years to come.
Thanks, Chrissy! You’re the first to post a story, so you get a free digital copy of “By Flood Waters.”
